Dozens of school librarians in central Nova Scotia are losing their jobs as the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board scrambles to cut costs.
Monica Nielsen, one of the librarians affected, was shocked by the news. She had been expecting an increased workload or shorter hours, but not an outright dismissal for 41 librarians.
"That was just impossible to believe," said Nielsen, who added that the cuts will have an impact on all students - from those looking for a book to those seeking a safe space.
The board, which runs schools in northern and central Nova Scotia, is facing a drop in enrolment and a $6.5-million shortfall this year.
